Cafe invites town to wake up to dementia
Following the release of the Alzheimer’s Society’s report on the nation’s attitudes towards dementia, in which it describes “our widespread fear and stigma about the illness”, Blackpool dementia care specialist Sheridan Care has called for more to be done locally to raise awareness and break down taboos around the subject.
The Society’s research reveals that of 4000 adults surveyed, nearly one third said dementia was the disease they feared most in later life – second only to cancer. 700,000 people in the UK suffer from dementia, many residing on the Fylde Coast and in Blackpool due to the high average age of the population and the concentration of residential care homes in the area.
Sheridan Care recently launched their Dementia Café to give relatives of residents the opportunity to discuss dementia issues with care professionals and each other. Following the Alzheimer’s Society report founders Beth and Jim Sheridan have decided to open up the Café to anyone who wants to learn more about dementia-related issues.
Beth Sheridan explains “we want to support the Society’s campaign to fight the stigma attached to dementia and believe that one way must be to create opportunities for people to learn more and talk about it. The Dementia Café has been invaluable in getting relatives of residents to understand how to reconnect with their loved one by overcoming conventional or misguided views of their dementia. We now want to give the wider population an opportunity to do the same.”
The Dementia Café runs every month at Elmsdene Care Home in Dean Street, South Shore. For further information contact Beth Sheridan on 01253 349617
